PRACTICE PHOTOSYNTHESIS LAB ANALYSIS DATA FOR ALL CLASSES Oxygen Produced in 3 Minutes PERIOD 1 2 3 4 6 7 Total /6 10 cm 41.8 20.

8 9.5 51.5 27.2 19.2 170/6=28.3 20 cm 30.2 44 8.3 26.3 18.8 29.6 157.2/6=26.2 % Increase or Decrease

7.5% decrease

Calculate the % decrease or increase for eac4h class period. Example for 7th grade results: Find the difference: 28.3-26.2= = 2.1

Divide the difference by original: 2.1/28.3 = .074 Multiply by 100: 0.074 x 100 = 7.4% decrease in Oxygen when Intensity decreased.

Notes: Periods 1,2,3, 7 started the experiment at 20 cm and then moved the lamp to 10 cm. Periods 4 and 6 started the experiment at 10 cm and moved the lamp to 20 cm. 1. Explain the discrepancy in the data. Please show your thinking. The discrepancy in the data is that the amount of photosynthesis extremely different between the periods. The amount of photosynthesis varies from 9.5 to 51.5. The amount of discrepancy is so tremendous someone must have inaccurate data. Also only 2 out of the six periods had it where when the light was closer to the elodea the plant had less photosynthesis part of this is because table 6 had a amazingly high amount of bubbles so I think that they had inaccurate data because no one else in the school had that many bubbles.

2. Explain how you would make changes in the experiment to increase the reliability. The changes I would have made to the lab is I would have made a more accurate way to see how big the bubbles were. Also I would have everyone except the counter to look how big the bubbles were. That way the counter can focus on the paper and the rest can search for bubbles coming out of the elodea. Another change I would have made is to change the elodea after each test. That way the photosynthesis from the previous test will not have any effect on the experiment. Another change I would make to the experiment is I would double check to make sure that the beaker was EXACTLY 10 or 20 centimeters away from the heat lamp.

3. Based on your answer to #2, write a step- by- step procedure to show the experimental design. In other words, how would you change the experiment to make it more reliable? Example: Begin like this 1. Cut elodea at an angle to 7 cm 2. Tear a few leaves off the end and lightly crush end of stem. 3. Obtain a beaker 4. Designate a counter of bubbles 5. Put elodea in the beaker 6. Fill beaker with water 7. Turn on heat lamp 8. Count bubbles 9. Take elodea out of the beaker 10. Obliterate elodea 11. Obtain a new elodea 12. Place it in a different beaker and refill the water 13. Put the heat lamp 20 centimeters away 14. Count the bubbles with the counter of bubbles 15. Tally up all the numbers and submit them to the class
