ENGLISH SYLLABUS

Year 3 Aims
The English syllabus will broadly follow the National Literacy Strategy with work divided into the three bands: word, sentence and text levels. This will be set within the context of UCS and take into account the length of lessons and the setting of homework at the Junior Branch.

Skills
Word Level
Children should be able to orchestrate a range of reading systems and cues, including phonic, graphic, syntactic and contextual methods in order to monitor their own reading and spelling. To have access to, and an interest in a suitable and technical vocabulary that is always being explored and ever expanding. To be able to access, explore and check words from a dictionary and thesaurus.

Sentence Level
Children should be able to deconstruct a sentence in order to increase appreciation and the understanding of a given text. To be able to manipulate the structure of a sentence in order to obtain the optimum level of expression when writing within any genre. Plan, draft, revise and edit their writing.

Text Level
To read and write with confidence and fluency. To listen to children read three sessions per week using a reading scheme. To be able to write in a range of fiction styles and genres and be familiar in the ways in which narratives are structured, including setting, character and plot. Recognise the purpose, use and layout of a range of non-fiction texts and to be able to write in a range of styles including newspaper, magazine, information and explanation and to be persuasive. To develop a lasting interest in Literacy and in books and to read with pleasure. Through studying a broad curriculum of literature, styles and genres, develop the childrens imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness. Read a range of novels as class readers and to discuss the book together.
