Standard:NETS-T:3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning

Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats.

What are several ways teachers can communicate with students and parents using technology?
Objective: Teachers will learn to use edmodo, remind101, and twitter to communicate with parents and students to keep them informed of classroom information.

SETTING UP YOUR EDMODO ACCOUNT

Next visit https://www.edmodo.com/

Click on the tab Im a Teacher

Fill in required information. I suggest using your school email address.

Most schools should already be in the database. Search with school name, city, or zip code whichever you find easiest. For our school district the middle school, high school, and most elementary schools are already entered.

You can choose to personalize your account with a photo and personal URL, but it is not required. After you have finished click on next step.

Find a community that deals with your subject matter so that you will be connected with other individuals who may inspire you with new ideas. You are creating a network of learners. You may click more than 1

You will have many options including creating wall posts that all students can see. Creating an assignment to post for completion. Posting a poll of what students think. Setting up alerts about upcoming assignments and events. IN ORDER TO USE THESE TOOLS YOU NEED TO CREATE A GROUP. YOU WILL GIVE THIS GROUP CODE TO YOUR STUDENTS. THEY WILL CREATE AN ACCOUNT JUST AS YOU DID BUT CLICK STUDENT AND THEN ENTER THE CODE. IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY LINK THEM TO YOUR PAGE!

Now have students create their account and you are ready to go!!!!!

SETTING UP YOUR REMIND101 ACCOUNT

Watch the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUkhoTrUhkU Remind101 is an easy way to send out texts to students and parents in a safe way so that no personal information is exchanged.

Sign up here. I use my school email for ease!

Fill in class name. I like to include as many people as possible in one group.

GIVE THE STUDENTS THE REMIND101 INFO

Give your students and parents the Remind101 phone number and message to text. Once they text the number they will be asked for their name to link in to your account. Make sure to text the number as well so you are linked in and know when messages are sent out.

ENSURE PARENTS THIS IS NOT YOUR PHONE NUMBER AND THAT YOU NEVER SEE THEIR NUMBER EITHER. THIS IS A COMPLETLEY SCHOOL SAFE TEXTING NETWORK. GOOD LUCK AND TEXT ON!

I suggest following subject based tweets. So I looked for math accounts.

When asked to follow people I put in mathematicians and scientists as my subjects to search so that all the people I follow are educational.

You have the option to add your contacts but I chose to skip because this is an educational twitter account.

You may choose to Upload an image but it is not required you may skip this step at the bottom.

INFO STUDENTS WILL NEED

Give students your twitter handle. (ex. Mine is @nickiharrison9 They will follow you from their twitter accounts You can post interesting sites, videos, pictures, reminders I recommend allowing students to follow you and do not follow your students because you may not want to see all the things that they follow on their personal twitter accounts!!!!
