Cis-platin

The structure for Cisplatin was deduced in 1893 by Alfred Werner. In the 1960s, Barnett Rosenberg was able discover that electrolysis of a platinum electrode resulted in the production of cisplatin, which inhibited binary fission in E. Coli and resulted in the substantial growth of their normal size. Rosenberg conducted several experiments placing tumors in rats and tested the effects of different platinum complexes on them. Cis-diamminedichloridoplatinum was the most effective out of this group. Cisplatin is used to treat sarcoma cancers. It kills cancer cells by binding to them and interfering with the cells ability to repair itself. This eventually leads to the death of the cell. Side effects include: Fatigue, Nausea and Neurotoxicity
