5. Controlling Traffic Flow

5.15.37 Other Ways Drivers Affect Traffic Flow

The law goes on to state that there are certain areas of the road where you can NEVER park or stand a vehicle. Standing refers to the way we park a motorcycle or bicycle. It is perfectly legal to drive by these areas or stop in them if a sign requires you to do so, but you must leave the space when the road is clear. Here is a list of the forbidden areas to park: In front of a public or private entrance or exit to a driveway. You cannot park or stand your vehicle within 15 FEET of a fire plug. When you are within 20 FEET of a crosswalk. You cannot park or stand your vehicle when you are within 30 FEET of approaching any flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign or any other traffic control signal that is beside the road. Within 20 FEET of an entrance to a fire station. On the opposite side of the street to the entrance to the fire station you cannot park within 75 FEET. This is because the trucks are big and need that space to pull out. Within 50 FEET of a railroad crossing If you must leave or park your car on a highway outside an urban area, try to park in the paved portion next to the road, known as the shoulder. If that is not possible, then park as far to the right as you can so others may pass. Always find a flat straight section of the road so others can see the car for 200 feet in each way. And finally, if this situation occurs at night turn on your parking lights so others can see your car and respond.
