What happened? Powerful Natural event: severely damaged New Zealand 2nd biggest city- killed 185 people 6.3 magnitude February 2011 Second deadliest natural disaster recorded in New Zealand Liquefaction affected the eastern suburbs producing 400000 tonnes of silt 60%of historic city was destroyed Unexpected Started in 2010 40km from city 2011 earthquake struck 20km SE of Christchurch and was 5km deep so created more damage 12:50pm lots of people in city Thought to be in wellington Cause The earthquake was part of a series of earthquakes and aftershocks following the Canterbury earthquake in 2010 Geologists had suspected there were buried and unrecognised faults in Canterbury Some may not have moved for thousands of years but have reactivated as stresses in the earths crust Built on silt, sand and gravel with water table under it. In quake, water rises mixing with sand Human impact Cathedral repairs cost $100m Killed about 185 people 10000+ homes destroyed They are still trying to clean up Total cost to insures of rebuilding is estimated at $20-30 billion More than 2000 port-a-loos set up-20000 ordered Future There are still earthquakes happening today Around 100 building expected to be demolished just in the 4 avenues of the central city Slowly rebuilding lives but some have left the city Building a civil defence bunker in parliament
