Reflection 2: Week 3 Digital Technologies This weeks activity focused on the use three basic read-write tools which

are Wikis, Blogs and websites. Wikis can be viewed as social platforms for education. You must have an account in order to access a wiki
User Account: Your identity on Wikispaces, consisting of username, password, and e-mail address Space: A wiki on which you can collaborate Page: Each space can consist of multiple pages

The link below is for the wiki that I created and in the wiki I have created my home page and I attached a YouTube clip on how to create wikis. http://www.wikispaces.com/ Username: elizamagodora Password: elizabeth In classroom set ups wikis facilitate the management of activities, resources and projects in classrooms. A wiki can also be viewed as a digital tool that can support Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPCK) and it can be regarded as a webpage that with an edit button. Wikis can be created as classroom workspaces where teachers and students can communicate and share ideas on certain aspects and subject topics. The use of tools and other resources have been made possible by the use of wikis. For effective learning outcomes the right scaffolding can be used together with the wiki. Wikis can be used to create assignments, share resources and make announcements. There are various levels of permission for accessing wiki

Adapted from Moon B and Cove S (2008), power point presentation The link below is for a website on how to create a wiki http://www.teachersfirst.com/content/wiki/ Below is the PMI chart which I used as a tool to outline the positives, negatives and the potential outcomes whether positive or negative of using wikis in classrooms Plus (all the positives) Minus (all the negatives) Implications (the potential outcomes whether positives or negatives) Students are inspired to have more knowledge of the subject because wikis encourage engaged learning

Wikis enable collaborative Some students ideas may be learning. Students can share influenced by others as a ideas with their peers result some students will end up duplicating other students work. Teachers can monitor the Students cannot edit the wiki students work and they can at the same time give feedback as the discussion progresses

Students can engage with their peers at their own pace. Teachers using wikis can use other tools to communicate with their students as individuals and groups

There is privacy in using wikis. Only the authorised students can be able to access and edit information on a particular wiki Wikis can be used on modern Some parents do not allow browsers such as tablets and their children to use devices phones such as mobile phone so some students may not have access to these resources.

Teachers can get direct insight into student engagement and contributions. The more the teachers help the students the more the achievements I the learning outcomes Wikis encourage more participation and enthusiasm Some teachers and students Using a wiki gives the ability to may not have Information measure student contribution Communication and and engagement in real time Technology skills. Teachers and students need to be trained on how to use wikis. This may be costly With proper safety measures in place issues such as cyber bullying are minimised.

Learning can happen both in and out of the classroom. In the event that students own tablets and mobile phones they can access wikis anytime and anywhere

Wikis allow students to collaboratively edit pages and to embed content from around the web including videos and images Through using wiki students can be able to look for study partners by looking for peers with different types of capabilities

Some wiki pages ay look The use of wikis allows for clumsy if too much creativity and innovation. information is added on the same page. By using wikis teachers can have access to professional development resources and student built study guides that will enable learning

I would use a wiki together with an appropriate scaffolding to enhance group work or team collaboration. For research in science I can place the students in various groups and then use post a research template on a wiki. Students can simply login with their secret passwords and edit on the template. The progress of the projects can be easily tracked. Wikis allow the use a various tools as a result I can use online flashcards for students as a strategy for remembering definitions. I would also use a wiki to display different topics. Parents will have access to their childrens sites so that they will be aware of the learning progress of their children. This is made possible because I can insert, images and videos. Wikis can be used at each level of the SAMR Model.

Substitution Instead of using pencil, pen and paper, students will easily edit on the wiki space. The students work can be printed instead of being handwritten. Students can save different drafts of their work and they can later edit the work. This has all been made possible by using wikis.

Augmentation Wiki spaces would allow students to utilise the embedded tools in the word processor such as grammar checks. Wikis will allow both the teacher and students to attach images, photographs, video clips and other graphics. Students can choose from multiple page layouts and alternate page designs to enhance their products.

Modification Students can work in small groups and they can edit their peers work and provide comments on each others work

Redefinition Students can interact or collaborate on collaborative issues. Projects can be cross curricular and multidisciplinary by utilising the strengths of the students in different classes.
