SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS IN SCOUTING

All of us want to include every boy who desires to be a part of Scouting in our Troops and Packs. However, we are seeing more and more youth with identified disabilities or special needs in the Scouting population. How do we, lay people most of uswithout special trainingcome alongside these Scouts and their families to help them succeed in the Scouting program? How do we communicate, ask questions, modify, and work together? It starts with baseline knowledge. This specific class will address neurodevelopmental disabilities and diagnoses including ADHD, Autism, Anxiety Disorders, Tourette Syndrome, and even some mental health issues like depression which can occur concurrently with the other diagnoses. We will discuss diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment. At this point, the Cub Scout and Boy Scout classes will diverge into what can be done at each program level to modify, the flexibility of each program for modification (Boy Scouts have Individual Scouting Plans, Requests for Modification of Eagle Scout Merit Badges, Application to Stay in Scouting Beyond Standard Age whereas Cub Scouting is much more flexible). Both classes will look at case studies and discuss as a group what you might expect from these Scouts, how to communicate with parents and get the information and support you need, how to lead by example, even how to train Youth Leaders to help disabled Boy Scouts.
