PR. SUJETO PR. OBJETO ADJ. POSESIVOS PR. POSESIVOS
Compare las traducciones en castellano de los pronombres posesivos: It is mine. Es mo/a. It is yours. Es tuyo/a. (suyo/a, para Vd.) It is his. Es suyo. (para personas del gnero masculino.) It is hers. Es suyo. (para personas del gnero femenino.) It is ours. Es nuestro/a. It is yours. Es vuestro/a. (suyo/a, para Vds.) It is theirs.
ADJETIVOS POSESIVOS PRONOMBRES POSESIVOS
Its my room. Es mi habitacin. Its mine. Its not her book. No es su libro. Its not hers. Theyre our keys. Son nuestras llaves. Theyre ours. Is this his dog? Es ste su perro? Is it his?
That wallet is mine! sa billetera es ma!
El pronombre posesivo yours se utiliza tanto para el singular como para el plural: Is this coat yours or mine? Este abrigo es tuyo o mo? Those coats arent yours. Aquellos abrigos no son suyos.
02
Se utiliza Whose? (De quin) cuando se busca a quin pertenece algo en una de dos construcciones: Whose + be + sustantivo Whose is this umbrella? De quin es este paraguas? Whose are those suitcases? De quin son esas maletas? Whose + sustantivo + be Whose umbrella is this? De quin es este paraguas? Whose suitcases are those? De quin son esas maletas?
Se puede utilizar Whose? sin un sustantivo siempre que quede claro a qu se est refiriendo: Whose is this (wallet)? De quin es sta (billetera)?
Se puede contestar a estas preguntas con el adjetivo posesivo, en cuyo caso hay que incluir el sustantivo: be + adjetivo posesivo + sustantivo Its my wallet. Es mi billetera. Theyre our keys.
The keys are ours. Las llaves son nuestras. Its mine. Es ma. Theyre ours. Son nuestras.
03
PROPIOS ADJETIVO POSESIVO
Its my brothers car. Its his car. Es el coche de mi hermano. Es su coche. (de l)
This is Mrs Whites baby. This is her baby. ste es el beb de la Sra. White. ste es su beb. (de ella) Si el sustantivo que identifica a la persona es plural acabado en -s slo se aade el apstrofe (): Its my parents house. Its their house. Theyre my sons toys. Son los juguetes de mis hijos. Its my friends party. Es la fiesta de mi amigo. Its my friends party. Es la fiesta de mis amigos.
Pero los sustantivos irregulares aaden s aunque estn en plural: These are the childrens toys.
~Whose is this passport? ~Its my wifes. ~Is that your car? ~No, its my parents.
~De quin es este pasaporte? ~Es de mi esposa. ~Es se tu coche? ~No, es el de mis padres.
Si algo pertenece a dos o ms personas, slo se aade s detrs de la ltima persona: This is Sue and Toms house. This is their house.
04
And a twin for the children. Y una (habitacin doble) para los nios.
Los servicios pueden incluir o no bao completo, ducha, televisin, telfono, etc.: Do you have a single without a bath? Tiene una individual sin bao? Has the room got a bath and TV? Tiene la habitacin bao y TV?
Se usa for para decir por cuntas noches se quiere la habitacin, y para cuntas personas: Id like a room for three nights. Querra una habitacin para tres noches. Have you got a room for two people? Tiene una habitacin para dos personas?
Las hojas de registro (registration forms) de los hoteles piden varios detalles de entrada y salida: check-in date check-out date da de llegada date of arrival date of departure da de salida
05
No se debe confundir el verbo like (gustar) con la preposicin like (como): What + be + sustantivo o frase equivalente + like? ~Whats the hotel like? ~Its small but very comfortable. ~What were the people like? ~They were very friendly. ~What was the food like? ~Awful, and there wasnt enough. ~Qu tal es el hotel? ~Es pequeo pero muy cmodo. ~Cmo era la gente? ~Eran muy amables. ~Qu tal era la comida? ~Malsima, y no haba suficiente.
~What was the prison like? ~Well, it wasnt exactly like a hotel. ~Cmo era la crcel? ~Bueno, no era como un hotel exactamente.
~What are those oranges like? ~They taste like lemons. ~What is John like? ~Hes like George, but a bit funnier.
~Qu tal son esas naranjas? ~Saben como limones. ~Qu tal es John? ~Es como George, pero algo ms gracioso.
Observe los siguientes ejemplos, con pronombres: I want a car like that. Quiero un coche como se. I want my hair like hers. Quiero un peinado como el suyo. (de ella)
De nuevo, tenga cuidado con no confundir el significado de la preposicin like en oraciones comparativas, con el verbo like (gustar): It was like a discotheque. Era como una discoteca.
06
This hotel looks like a prison. Este hotel parece una crcel. Aquellos limones parecen limas. He looked like John Lennon. (l) se pareca a John Lennon.
look like + pronombre My daughter looks like me. Mi hija se parece a m. Our car looks like that. Nuestro coche se parece a aqul. It looked like those. Se pareca a aqullos.
En los ejemplos siguientes, fjese en que like puede ir seguido de pronombres posesivos: looks like + pronombre posesivo That hat looks like mine. Ese sombrero se parece al mo. That car looks like ours. Ese coche se parece al nuestro.
Ponga especial atencin para no confundir las construcciones similares con el verbo look, como look like (parecer) o el Phrasal Verb look at (mirar): Look at that car! Mira ese coche! That car looks like ours. Aquel coche se parece al nuestro.
10
O con el Phrasal Verb look for: ~What are you looking for, sir? ~Im looking for my car. ~What does it look like? ~Its a red sports car. ~Qu est buscando, seor? ~Estoy buscando mi coche. ~Cmo es? ~Es un deportivo rojo.
O con el Phrasal Verb look after: Could you look after the kids for a while? Podras cuidar de los cros un rato?
07
Qu tiempo hace?
Hace fro. Its freezing. Its hot. Hace calor. Its wet. Hace mucho fro.
Its cold, windy and its snowing. Hace fro, viento y est nevando. March is a very rainy month. Marzo es un mes muy lluvioso.
Recuerde cmo aumentar la intensidad de un adjetivo utilizando very (muy) y quite (bastante): ~Whats the weather like in Spain? ~Its quite sunny and its very warm. ~Qu tiempo hace en Espaa? ~Est bastante soleado y muy templado.
11
08
Its not hot outside. No hace calor fuera. There will be sunshine at midday. Har sol a medioda. It snowed every day last week. Nev todos los das la semana pasada.
Look! Its hailing. Mire Est granizando. It will rain on Friday. De nuevo observe el uso del sujeto vaco it: It + be + adjetivo o frase equivalente It was windy this afternoon. Estuvo ventoso esta tarde. Its very foggy today.
12
There was fog in the south. Hubo niebla en el sur. There are strong winds this morning. Hay vientos fuertes esta maana. There will be clouds over London.
VERBO
There will be hail tomorrow. It will hail tomorrow. Habr granizo maana. Granizar maana. There will be some snow tonight. It will snow tonight. Habr algo de nieve esta noche. Nevar esta noche. There will be some rain later. It will rain later. Habr algo de lluvia ms tarde. Llover ms tarde. Y recuerde que snow y rain tambin tienen un adjetivo relevante: What a rainy day! Que da ms lluvioso!
09
It will be fine in the south, but it will rain in the north.
The day will start fine. El da empezar con buen tiempo. Then the weather will change. Despus cambiar el tiempo.
Para decir que el tiempo va a cambiar (por ejemplo, que ser ms templado, ms fro, etc.) se usa la estructura will get warmer/cloudier, etc. Es decir, los adjetivos en grado comparativo: will + get + comparativo
It will get warmer in the west. El tiempo templar en el oeste. It will get colder later. Ms tarde har ms fro. It will get better in the afternoon. Mejorar por la tarde.
13
I think it will rain tomorrow. Creo que llover maana. I think there will be snow next week. Creo que nevar la semana prxima. I think the weather will get better. Creo que el tiempo mejorar.
