People are not always who they seem to be. Although this may seem like common knowledge, most of us still incorporate schemata into our first impressions of a person that is solely based upon their outward appearance. This was one of the biggest mistakes I had ever made when my University of Utah Honors College Humanities instructor, Jol Arvizo-Zavala, first walked into class. Jol is a person of color who is a rather large man with a loud voice. He is, as hes readily admitted himself, intimidating at first glance. I became apprehensive of my future performance in the class because I have had some personal struggles when trying to interact with male teachers in the past. I didnt know what to expect from him. But his actions during our first class discussion spoke louder than his appearance ever would. We had been told to hold our arms out a certain way. However, that was only a distraction, for the next moment Jol was holding up an enormous sign with the word nigger on it. Many students in our class were offended, some were shocked and speechless, and then there was me. Growing up rather sheltered, I had no idea that word could be so offensive to someone. I knew it was often used as a derogatory term against black people, but I mistakenly thought that, Oh, it depends on the context that the word is used in. If someone were to use the term as an endearment to someone, would it still carry the same weight? When I said this to some of my classmates, they looked shocked. Horrified, even. I probably looked very surprised right back at them. Truth was, I didnt know I had stated something extremely racist. I had only stated my honest opinion on it. Jol briefly explained the history behind the n-word, but it didnt really sink in until I had asked one of my black friends why I had gotten the reaction that I did. He explained to me that the word meant that you were lower than humanity, that you were the scum of the earth and didnt deserve to walk on the same soil that they did. That was when I opened my eyes in surprise, shocked that anyone would call my friend, who has been so kind and generous and patient with me, that horrible, horrible word. I think this actually happens a lot, the fact that if you are not of that race, derogatory terms meant for that specific race may not carry the same weight for you as it would for them, as my friend pointed out to me. Its just the fact that some people can be nave, like me. What we say is meant to be harmless, but it hurts other people, and we dont realize it until someone points it out to us. Intent versus impact, as Jol has taught us. After that class I wasnt as afraid of Jol anymore. As Ive gotten to know Jol more throughout the year, Ive realized that he is an extremely friendly and generous person who is incredibly invested in helping those who are oppressed overcome socially constructed institutions of injustice. Because Ive been so sheltered throughout my life, Im certainly grateful that I have had the opportunity to take his class. It has brought to my attention the realities of privileges and oppression that I was unaware of until I took the class, but now seem painfully obvious everywhere I go. I always come into class excited to learn what he is going to teach that day and, despite the fact that I am very introverted and tend not to talk, many of my classmates have stated that this is the only class that they actually hear me speak. Jol Arvizo-Zavala has been a major influence in both my academic and personal life. The environment that Jol creates for his students makes me feel safe enough to voice my own opinion, even if it is controversial or offensive to some people. I contribute to class discussions when I can and I try to incorporate the knowledge I accumulate from the class into my everyday life so that I can use the privileges I have to help undermine the systems of oppression that hurt us all.
