Girls on the Run South Louisiana celebrates season with community 5K BATON ROUGE, La. Girls on the Run South Louisiana will celebrate the culmination of its 10week fall season with a community 5K at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, 6400 Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Girls on the Run South Louisiana invites men, women, boys and girls of all ages to run in the noncompetitive event alongside more than 550 local third through eighth grade girls. More than 1500 runners, volunteers and spectators are expected to attend the celebration filled with fun activities, music and free food. Online registration is available for $25 at www.girlsontherunsola.org until 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. Packet Pick-up will take place at Varsity Sports on Perkins Road from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013. Registration and packets will be available for $30 the day of the 5K. Proceeds from the 5K benefit the Girls on the Run South Louisiana scholarship fund. More than 50 percent of program participants need financial assistance to participate in the program. -more-

Girls on the Run facilitates an after-school program to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The nonprofit envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. The 5K event allows girls to shine through those accomplishments. Girls on the Run South Louisiana is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of 210+ locations throughout the United States and Canada. Director Hydie Wahlborg formed the first Girls on the Run council in the state of Louisiana in 2009 with 24 girls and two schools in Baton Rouge.
