WHATS INSIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

sodium bicarbonate! This chemical (AKA baking soda; NaHCO3). This is known as a base and great for decomposing acids found in most fuels. When it burns, it releases carbon dioxide which pushes away oxygen to smother the ames. Great for type C res for its low conductivity. potassium chloride! This chemical (KCl) is used in some extinguishers as a foam. Upon discharge, the chemical turns into a foam to smother the re.

potassium bicarbonate! This thick powder (CHKO3) is great for smothering res. When it melts, it creates a barrier to seal the re from oxygen. Great for type A res.

carbon dioxide! This chemical (CO2) is used as a propulsion agent. This gas pushes the chemicals out of the hose and onto the re.

monoammonium phosphate! This small crystal structure (H6NO4P) melts under heat creating a barrier, like the potassium, but more suited for class B res.
