AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM LINKS

SPECIFIC LESSON OBJECTIVE

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

ASSESSMENT (what & how) Teacher to assess student capability via brief anecdotal notes. (Formal Assessment) Teacher can also causally assess via close (visual) monitoring of students when working as a whole class group. In order to determine whether students have understood the concept, the teacher can also casually quiz or pose a question whilst they are working (but ensure we do not pester them too much). (Informal Assessment) Teacher can also determine understanding by engaging in discussion at the end of class and asking various questions and encouraging/promoting thoughtful discussion/responses from the group. (Informal Assessment)

Geographical Knowledge and Understanding: (ACHGK009)

Geographical Skills & Inquiry: Collecting, recording, evaluating and representing: (ACHGS014) (ACHGS015) Observing, questioning and planning: (ACHGS013) Communicating: (ACHGS017)

1. Collate ideas from their own observations and others 2. Visually represent their ideas in a mind map (with assistance) 3. Explain and communicate their ideas with their peers

TEACHING & LEARNING EXPERIENCES (Include Learner Diversity) Students are shown a short Youtube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzDV YpPUjcs) so that they can begin to generate ideas about the earth and the different forms of geography that appear on Earth, i.e. rivers, lakes, oceans, trees, forests etc. Students will then create a brainstorm or a mind map using Bubbl.us or Spiderscribe (teacher-directed at this point (using IWB or similar), but students are encouraged to give as many ideas as possible), which will introduce them to with the topic of Geographical Locations and Divisions, and their relation to Australia. ** Teacher can also get students to participate interactively by getting them to come up and write their contributions on the IWB. The purpose of this task is to get students familiar and comfortable with exploring the topic of Geography using ICT.

KEY QUESTIONS
What springs to mind, when we talk about the Earth, and where it is located? What kind of words can you come up with that remind you/link to/are connected to the Earths location, in relation to other countries? (In reference to a specific phrase or word) What other ideas can you come up with, that could possibly stem from this idea?
