THERMAL ANALYSIS OF STEAM TURBINE

SYNOPSIS In an impulse turbine the potential energy is first converted into kinetic energy by discharging steam through a carefully shaped nozzle. The steam jet
discharged into air is directed onto curved buckets fixed on the periphery of the runner to extract the kinetic energy and convert it to useful work. During the process the blade may

fail due to high tangential and axial forces. So the detailed investigation is made over the different turbine blade materials in order to reduce the failures that occur in blade. So finite element stress strain and thermal analysis has been carried out on four different materials of impulse turbine blade. It is an aim of the analysis to compare how well the blades support the forces exerted on them. The tangential and axial forces on the blades will be calculated. Safe working stresses and strains will be identified and post solution checks will be carried out to confirm the order of magnitude of the finite element results. !isualizations of the finite element results will be presented. During the thermal analysis the temperature distribution and heat transfer rate for different materials are concentrated to reduce the failure. In order to improve the reliability. The different blades materials are analyzed and different theoretical calculation are made.

The project is designed using "D modeling #$D packages and all critical parts are verified by theoretical calculations. $%S&S results were taken for a turbine. The test result shows that the design is cost effective for the intended purpose.
