Celebration of Success
Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The North Orange County ROP is a collaborative effort in career technical education by the Anaheim Union and Fullerton Joint Union High School Districts, and by the Brea Olinda, Los Alamitos, and Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School Districts. ROP is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and is approved by the California State Department of Education. It serves over 23,000 students annually in the fifteen cities of the North Orange County region.

Thanks to the CGSs

The Career Guidance Specialists deserve special thanks. All 173 seniors who were nominated were interviewed on campus by panels arranged by these counselors and composed of board members, school staff and business people. One student is selected by campus interviewers to be the ROP Student of the Year from that campus. Career Guidance Specialists, who are 2/3 ROP employees and 1/3 district employees, also give their time to help register students, usher, and sell flowers for this event. They are: Gracie Montes, Anaheim High School Jenny Brand and Jennifer Cormier, Brea Olinda High School Sarah Arciba, Buena Park High School Ken Gompert, Cypress High School Karen Edwards, El Camino Real High School Laura Carvelli, El Dorado High School Brianne Gullotti, Esperanza High School Han Tran, Fullerton Union High School Brian Bannon, Gilbert High School Maria Uribe, Katella High School Van Parker, Kennedy High School Vicky Eagleson, La Habra High School Candice Baratelle, La Sierra and La Vista High Schools Annel Widger, Loara High School Christy Ricks, Los Alamitos High School Diane Kuramoto, Magnolia High School Amanda Bean, Savanna High School Brandi Augenstein, Sonora High School Cindy Osborne, Sunny Hills High School Dionne Evans, Troy High School Ellen Gerasimou, Valencia High School Elizabeth Cardenas, Western High School Nancy Coulter, Yorba Linda High School

What is the North Orange County ROP Career Education Foundation?

The Career Education Foundation was founded by John Dewey almost forty years ago to reward students who excelled in their ROP classes. At the time, John Dewey was the Director of Educational Services at the North Orange County ROP. The $1500 seed money to begin the foundation came from rolls of copper wire unearthed by construction students digging out a pool filled in with dirt and debris. In 1973, the awards totaled $300.

The committee appreciates all the folks who took time from their busy schedules to paper screen hundreds of applications, and especially Judy Glodt, who fed all the nomination readers her delicious homemade lasagna. Jeanie and Stan Davis and Kathy Adams donated the flowers that are for sale at the event. Thanks to sign makers Steve Maurer and Steve Marsh. Kathy Adams, Jeanie Davis and Carol Jones organized the flowers for sale assisted by committee members. Pat Hansmeyer created the program and wrote the script. Many, many thanks this year to Christina Campbell for organizing the paperwork, and to Michele Schirmers and Mirna Castaneda for their assistance. Thanks to Christina Campbell and Carol Jones for their proofreading expertise. A very special thanks to our fabulous fundraisers: Kathy Adams is the new fundraising chair. Christina Campbell organizes Angels and Ducks game fundraisers; Carol Jones and Kathy Adams manage Krikorian Theater and Regal Theater tickets; Bunco, cookbook fundraisers and raffles; and Jeanie Davis organizes the Entertainment Book sales. Thanks also to Kathy Adams, Camina Sylvestro, Carol Jones, Arloa Everitt, Judy Glodt, and many members of the Career Education Foundation Board who helped organize the Bunco fundraiser, which made over $1,000.00 for the Foundation.

The Foundation has grown!

The first awards to students were in the $25 and $50 range, and there were very few of those. Today, students will be awarded over $40,000. Many ROP employeesmore than 100 this yeargive to the Foundation. They know that every penny of foundation money is used to promote and reward student excellence. Service organizations, such as Altrusa International, Inc., of Anaheim; the Anaheim Community Foundation; Century 21, Inc.; Rotary Club of Fullerton; the Mary E. Moore Family Foundation, and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union give because they know the impact their generosity has on the students. In addition to funding the awards, the foundation board also sets aside funds for books and supplies for students with financial need.

Students deserve your support!

You can help champion top ROP students! The Career Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization (federal tax ID 23-7316436), so your contributions are tax deductible. We acknowledge your donation with a letter that details your donation amount and provides you with the tax ID number for your itemized deductions. To help students, please write your check to the Career Education Foundation and send it to: Howard Burkett, Treasurer c/o North Orange County ROP 385 North Muller Street Anaheim, CA 92801

Thanks to the Judges

We would like to thank the many school board members, community and business leaders and ROP staff who gave their time to interview finalists for the awards. These judges embody the commitment of the community to the future. The judges on every panel said they had a difficult time choosing from among such great students.

Career Pathway Star Nominees

Outstanding high school senior and adult students are nominated in this category for excellence in career pathway and workplace skills and for exhibiting leadership skills in class. Nominees state that they will use these skills in their chosen careers. Each high school and adult nominee will receive $50 and a certificate of nomination. Each winner will receive a trophy and $500. In two instances, when judges believed students were equal, they (Cheri Fawley and Thomas Hoagy Holguin) donated cash so two could have equal prizes. There are three ties in the pathway awards.

High School Star Awards

North Orange County ROP serves 26 high schools with career technical classes on campus and at ROP facilities. One ROP student from each participating high school in the region is selected to represent that high school as the ROP Star Student. Each Star Student will receive $250. The high school Career Guidance Specialist on participating campuses arranged for all nominated seniors to be interviewed by a panel. The panels had a very difficult time choosing from among such excellent students. This year, the Anaheim Community Foundation is sponsoring the awards for top students at the seven high schools in the City of Anaheim, including Anaheim High School; Gilbert High School; Katella High School; Loara High School, Magnolia High School; Savanna High School and Western High School. Cypress Womans Club is sponsoring the award for the Cypress High School Star Student. High schools served by ROP are:
