    An atom consists of three main subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom, called the nucleus, and have approximately equal mass. Protons have a positive charge while neutrons have no charge. Electrons have a very small mass and a negative charge, and orbit around the nucleus. The number of protons determines the element, while the number of neutrons varies between isotopes of the same element.
