What is pantoprazole used for? Pantoprazole works to decrease the acid in the stomach by reducing how much is made. This medicine can be used to treat severe heartburn caused by the following: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) ulcers other conditions determined by your doctor.
How do you take pantoprazole? Take this medicine at the same time each day. Swallow this medicine whole; do not crush or chew the tablet Take it before a meal; however, if it upsets your stomach take it with food.
What special instructions do you need to know? It may take several days for this medicine to reach full effect. Antacids may be used to help relieve the heartburn unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Take this medicine 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take the antacid.
Limit your alcoholic beverages and smoking while taking this medicine. Alcohol and smoking increase the amount of acid made in the stomach.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medication.
Are there side effects from taking pantoprazole? Taking pantoprazole does not usually cause people many problems. The following may occur, but should go away as your body gets used to the medicine: headache, diarrhea, nausea, or dizziness.
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if the above side effects become bothersome or if you notice any other side effects not listed above.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following: unusual tiredness or weakness, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, upper abdominal pain or yellow skin and eyes.
