NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATURE

SENATOR THOMAS W. LIBOUS 52nd Senate District ASSEMBLYMAN CLIFFORD W. CROUCH 122nd Assembly District ASSEMBLYWOMAN DONNA A. LUPARDO 123rd Assembly District

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 20th, 2010

Joint Statement from Senator Tom Libous, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Assemblyman Cliff Crouch We share the concerns of the community over the planned closure of Broome Developmental Center. We welcome County Executive Prestons assistance in our efforts to keep our community safe and fight OPWDDs plan. We have been meeting with the Governors Office on a regular basis to address the issues and accomplish three goals: 1. Protect our community from potentially dangerous individuals who aren't ready to be released. We strongly believe there is not enough capacity in the statewide system to accommodate the number of individuals who have a history of behavioral problems that will continue to need institutional care. 2. Ensure the best quality of care and service for those transitioning into the community. 3. Preserve hundreds of essential local jobs at the BDC. We won't stop fighting until the job is done.
