    Hexokinase is an enzyme that catalyzes the first step of glycolysis, the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate. This reaction uses one molecule of ATP to phosphorylate glucose and is important in glucose metabolism. Hexokinase exists in four isozymes (types) in humans that are expressed in a tissue-specific manner and have different kinetic properties and regulatory features important for glucose homeostasis.
