FACTS TECHNOLOGY IN POWER SYSTEM

What is FACTS? Why we are using FACTS? Types of FACTS Improving the Transmission Transient Response by FACTS devices Providing Power Quality in Distribution System by FACTS devices. Conclusion References

Flexible AC Transmission System is defined as Alternating current transmission systems incorporating power electronic based and other static controllers to enhance controllability and increase power transfer capability.

Increased transmission system reliability. Better utilization of existing power transmission system. It damp out power oscillations and increases the transient stability. Increase power transmission capability

A.THYRISTOR

B. GTO

EXAMPLE:-

A.

Transmission system Without FACTS Devices

B. Transmission System With FACTS Devices

1. Shunt connected controllers (STATCOM) 2. Series connected controllers(SSSC 3. Combined shunt-series controllers (UPFC)

In a series compensation , the controller (variable impedance or variable voltage source or combination of both) is in series to the system. FACTS works as a controllable voltage source.

1. 2. 3.

Reduction of voltage fluctuation. Reduction of series voltage drop. Improvement of system damping.

In shunt compensation, the controller (variable impedance or variable voltage source or combination of both) is parallel to the system. FACTS works as a controllable current source.

1.

2. 3. 4.

Compensate the reactive power and hence reduce the losses Improvement in static and transient stability Improvement in power quality The net result improvement in power factor

It is a combination of series and shunt controllers. It is used to control both current and voltage in phase with the line.

Nowadays FACTS technology has been improving day by day so we reducing all losses in transmission system ,so increasing the transfer power capability and controllability .
