NEWS 8 TERM 1 2014

MONDAY 10 MARCH 2014

Leadership Team News

Welcome to this weeks edition of the newsletter.

Privacy Policy
The school has amended the Privacy Statement and Collection Notice to ensure compliance with the amendments to the Privacy Act. I reassure and remind parents that the school takes very seriously its obligations regarding the privacy of information about students and parents that is provided to the school prior to and during the course of a students enrolment at the school. The schools new Privacy Statement and Collection Notice are located on this link and also on the school website should you wish to have a read.

Car Parking
We would ask all parents to exercise caution when parking in and around the school. There have been a number of incidents already this year, so please be extra careful when parking and reversing.

School Uniform
Please check that your child is wearing the correct school uniform each day. There are a few children who have started to wear bracelets and other jewellery which is not part of the uniform. A uniform note will be sent home for those who continue to wear the incorrect school uniform. If your child has to wear a different uniform for a short period of time, a note to your childs teacher would be appreciated. Please check the website for the correct uniform requirements. Thank you to the many parents who always ensure that their child is in the correct uniform.

Whole School Mass

The first whole school Mass for 2014 will be celebrated on Thursday 27 March at 9am in the Mary MacKillop Centre. As this is the season of Lent, it may a good opportunity to do something extra as you journey with us to Easter. We would love you to join us for this Mass.

Mini Hotdog morning tea and lunch will continue on Mondays and Tue sdays during Lent. Mini Hotdogs cost 50c and all money goes to Project Compassion. They are available at the tuckshop.

Changes to Dates for Confirmation and First Communion

Due to the appointment of Fr Michael McCarthy to the position of Bishop of Rockhampton, the dates for Confirmation and First Communion have been changed in the parish. Confirmation and First Communion will now be a combined ceremony to take place at St Monicas Church in Tugun on Saturday evening, 31 May at 6pm. Please note this in your calendars.

Mini Vinnie Group for 2014

Last Friday at assembly, the Year 6 Mini Vinnies group was announced. It is with pleasure that we announce these students for the 2014 team: Ella, Alex, Harrison, Matt, Hayden, Daniella, Seamus, Maddie, Eliza, Oscar, Jamey, Claire, Sophie, Natalie, Harry, Sam, Erin and Bonnie. These students have already been assisting with enthusiasm in Project Compassion activities.

Writers Day of Excellence and Passion

Some of our Year 7 students attended the Writers Day of Excellence and Passion held at Marymount recently. Our ten students worked with Marymount Primary Year 7 and Marymount College Year 8 students, led by author, Christine Bongers, who inspired the children in the development of their creative writing skills.

New Caledonian Billets 2014

Its that exciting time again when our friends from New Caledonia plan to come to Australia. We are looking for ten St As families to billet 20 delightful 10-12 year old children from New Caledonia. The New Caledonian children need to be billeted for 4 nights, Monday 6 October till Thursday 9 October (inclusive). The children are billeted in pairs, 2 boys or 2 girls. That means 4 nights with two young students sharing your dining table and family life each evening, and then the fun of breakfast the next morning! During each of the days the children will be with their own teachers touring the Gold Coast. Monday 6 October is a public holiday so you will be able to enjoy the children for that full day and into the night. You would pick them up around 9am on Monday morning. In the past St As families have told truly beautiful, touching stories about the time shared with their New Caledonian friends..playing cricket in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline, swimming in the pool, playing at the beach, giggling as they communicated together in the different languages, just hanging out at home, sharing our toys, giving them some of our clothes that no longer fit us. This is a pretty big adventure for the NC children, and also for their parents who remain behind. Their lives are simple and often quite poor, so to share in our lives is a truly amazing experience for the 10-12 year old girls and boys. It is a real honor to be able to billet the children and care for them, and to give their parents back at home the peace of mind that their children are with safe and caring St As families. It would also be safe to say that the lives of our families were enhanced by the cultural exchange and warm friendships they develop. In the past St As families have even travelled to NC to visit the village of their billet that is how strong the bond became. If you would be interested in this great experience for your family and could open your home to two delightful children could you please complete the form below. Or if you would like more information please contact Mrs Rohanna.

Registration forms will be distributed during a free demonstration. During the 6 week program games will be played inside an inflatable soccer field, which captures the imagination of students, giving them a great soccer experience. Training will take place inside a skills square focusing on different skills each week, such as dribbling, turning and shooting. As part of the program players can also purchase a soccer kit (Top and Shorts). The program starts on Monday 5 May, 3:15pm - 4:15pm. A note from the Guidance Counsellor

My name is Ainslie Wheeler and I have been appointed as the Gu idance Counsellor replacing Mr Tony OShea for 2014 at St Augustines Parish Primary School. I am a psychologist who has a passion for working with children, adolescents and their families. I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to work at St Augustines Parish Primary School and have felt privileged to have become a part of this great community. The welcome that I have received from the staff, parents, and students of the school to date has been wonderful. I am very much looking forward to a productive 2014 and to working collaboratively with teachers, parents, and students. The role of the guidance counsellor is to predominately support the social, emotional and behavioural needs of students who may be experiencing difficulties within the school setting. If you feel that your child would benefit from guidance counsellor support this year please discuss this with your childs classroom teacher or contact me via email (ainslie.wheeler@bne.catholic.edu.au) or through the school office (07 5598 8730). At this time, a meeting can be arranged which will provide an opportunity to review your childs current needs and ongoing support. Should you wish to engage in the service a consent form will be presented, which will need to be

completed in order for services to be provided for your child.

This service can be accessed at any time

throughout the year. I am at St Augustines Parish Primary School on a Monday and Wednesday. I wish your family all the best for 2014. Best wishes, Ainslie Wheeler (Ainslee.Wheeler@bne.catholic.edu.au)
