WWI Vocab Review: 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand: the archduke of Austria-Hungary before WWI.

His assassination was a trigger that caused the war to break out. 2. Homefront: the civilian population and activities of a nation whose armed forces are engaged in war abroad. 3. Treaty of Versailles: the 1919 treaty that ended World War I. 4. Trench Warfare: a kind of warfare during WWI in which troops huddled at the bottom of trenches and fired artillery and machine guns at each other. 5. League of Nations: and organization set up after WWI to settle international conflicts. 6. Woodrow Wilson: the 28th US President. He was president from 1913-1921 (during WWI). 7. Zimmerman Telegram: The Zimmermann Telegram (or Zimmermann Note) was a 1917 diplomatic proposal from the German Empire for Mexico to join the Central Powers, in the event of the United States entering World War I on the side of the Allied Powers. 8. Neutrality: refusing to take sides in a war. 9. Alliances: a union or association formed for mutual benefit, usually between countries. 10.Imperialism: the policy by which stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military control over weaker nations or territories. 11. Militarism: the buildup of armed forces in a nation. 12. Armistice: an end to fighting.
