Carbon Family

Carbons main use is to form hydrocarbons which are most commonly known for being used to make gasoline and kerosene through distillation. Carbon is what diamonds are made from, the strongest stone on the earth. Carbon is also used in the graphite that can be found in your pencil lead. Carbon is used to date fossils.

Uses
Silicon is used in eye glasses, glass, and hearing aids. Germanium is used in transistors. Tin is used for coating lead or zinc and steel to prevent erosion. Lead is used for shields from radiation and storage batteries.

Facts
Carbon gets its name from the Latin word, Carbo which means charcoal. Antoine Lavoisier found and experimented with carbon. Carbon can form millions of different compounds.
