March is Social Work Month

President's Message
We are almost halfway into Social Work Month 2012, so it is time to reflect and look forward. Congratulations to all of us for still being social workers! It is truly amazing to me that we continue to do the work we do, given the present state of our country and the economy. We continue to put our own personal situations aside to help those who need it more than we do. And in the populations we work with, recognize that there is still so much left to be done. I have to thank all of you for continuing to do this work in spite of being underpaid, underappreciated and under recognized. One can say it is our mission. For most of us who have been working in the AIDS field, that is how it started. We saw a need, and a few stepped up, and almost 30 years later, here we still are. It's what social workers have always done, will continue to do. And when HIV and AIDS no longer need us, we will go on to the next crisis that does. But today we are still needed in the HIV and AIDS field. The future is about continuing to do this work and having

someone to support us. For those of us who plan to retire soon, the future is about knowing we are handing our positions off to those who will continue the fight for our patients. This is why PASWHA was started. I hope all of you will be at the Boston College Social Work and AIDS Conference in Miami in May. Please come by the table and say hi, to your Board of Directors who are all working very hard for you. Let us know your ideas, your concerns and what you need from us. PASHWA needs to continue: to give you a voice, to support the work you do, and to encourage others to join us in the work that is still to be done. I am asking all of you to make sure your renewals are up to date. In addition, if you can add $5.00 or more to your membership, that would be great. I am also asking you to join our membership campaign by inviting all the social workers and organizations you know and network with to join PASWHA today. Why? For this organization to survive, we need money, especially now. Without sufficient funds, PASWHA will not be able to move forward and I do believe very strongly that for all of us, we need to survive, grow and get stronger. I believe that PASWHA can become the voice of social workers who have taken up the mission of helping those persons living with HIV and AIDS, their families, support systems, and others. On this day, in this month, and always, I am proud to be a social worker. You should be too.

Campaign Drive
On the morning of March first, a letter from Alan Rice went out to over 250 people in agencies and schools recognizing Social Work Month and inviting them to join PASWHA or request more information. Will Lyne, chair of PASWHA's Membership Relations and Recruitment committee encourages you to ask organizations to join and send to Tony Cox via tony@collaborativesolutions.net suggestions of potential individual and/or organizational members. He also reminds members, you're always welcome to participate in any of the standing committees of PASWHA. Thank you!
