Female Genital Mutilation is the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. There are four types of this procedure that are done on infants, girls and women. This procedure is very painful causing physical, psychological, psychiatric problems and in some cases death. This procedure is in violation of the human rights of the children, girls and women. Awareness and understanding must be a priority to end FGM now to avoid the children and

WHY IS FGM HAPPENING Female Genital Mutilation is still happening because of deep traditional roots, its cultural, social- economic status, to prevent promiscuity, secure marriage, prevention of sexual desires, feelings and pleasures, martial fidelity, to secure virginity, hygiene, religious beliefs, children are not able to refuse the procedure, resistance to change, lack of education, services, intervention, awareness and knowledge to comprehend the long term affects of a senseless medical procedure.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO END THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND PROTECT THEM FROM ENDURING THIS PAINFUL PROCEDURE
FGM was once a deep- rooted cultural tradition that was foreign to the outside world. This tradition has now virtually left no continent untouched this has occurred because of immigrant and refuges that migrate and bringing their beliefs and values wit them concerning this practice. This procedure is illegal in Canada however there are now thousand of girls and women now living in Canada who bear the irreversible physical and psychological scars that have are associated with having this procedure done. Every eleven seconds another child falls preys to this senseless and vicious procedure. There are thousands of girls within our communities that are at risk of being sent out of the country to return to their homeland where they will be forced to undergo this procedure. These girls and women are not identifiable they maybe your neighbor, your childs friend, your peer, or someone you randomly pass or the street or sit next to on a bus. We need to advocate for immediate eradication of this violence against women and children. As they cry loudly let us use our voices loudly to say no more FGM.

What role in Canada taking on this issue? The Ontario Human Rights Commission views this procedure as a violation of the Human Rights of women and girls and is playing an active role here and abroad to end this procedure. Is there an FGM day in Toronto? There does not appear to be an FGM day designated in Toronto this maybe due to the lack of knowledge, education and awareness of this procedure. Together we can take an active stand in bring awareness that can eventually lead to a designated day countrywide to end FGM SO JOIN THE CAUSE MAKE A DIFFERNCE LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD TO REPRESENT THE CRIES THAT ARE ECHOED WORLDWIDE.
