Meiosis in Action
Name: _____________________ Partner: _______________________

You will receive a starting cell which is either male or female. Each cell is diploid. Each chromosome is a different colour and homologous chromosomes are indicated by their size and the position of the centromere. Part 1: On a blank piece of A4 paper, draw and label the process of meiosis for your cell (spermatogenesis or oogenesis). Be careful not to lose chromosomes and use the colours to show each chromosomes journey. If you are representing oogenesis, make sure that you show the inequality of each division. Show at least one instance of crossing over. Make sure that you show and label : - the 8 stages of meiosis - the spermatogonium or the oogonium - the diploid number or the haploid number of the cell at the beginning and the cells at the end - the spermatozoids and the ootid - in which phase cytokinesis is found /8 /1 /2 /2 /1

- the correct number of chromosomes and the specific characteristics of spermatogenesis or oogenesis /4 - crossing over /1

Part 2: After you have done Part 1 on your own, circulate through the class until you find your meiotic partner with a gamete of the opposite sex. Place your 2 sheets of paper together with tape so that you can easily see the two processes of gametogenesis side by side. Attach a third sheet of paper underneath these 2 sheets and fertilize the ootid with a spermatozoid. When the DNA from the 2 cells comes together in one cell, a zygote is produced. Show the three cells, labelled with their names and the correct numbers of chromosomes /6

Part 3: Using the zygote and its chromosomes as the starting cell, draw and label the steps of mitosis for this new cell. Make sure that you label: - the phases of mitosis - the haploid or diploid number of the cell at the start and the cells at the end /2 /1

Now, return to your original male or female cells and circle the chromosomes that are found in the zygote /1 Appearance (clarity of the images, neatness of the drawings) Total: /1 /30
