MESSAGE FROM THE FRENCH DEPARTMENT

To all children in Years 3, 4 5 and 6
Well done everyone for all your hard work on your assessments. The French Department is pleased with all your progress. We have an exciting start to next term with the forthcoming annual Art Festival. This year, the French Department is researching Ren Franois Ghislain Magritte. He was a Belgian surrealist artist who became well known for a number of witty and thoughtprovoking images that fall under the umbrella of surrealism. We will have a lesson this week to introduce him to you but in the holidays would like you to reproduce a piece of his amazing work. This can be done with any medium paint, chalk, photo, pencil drawing. Use whichever medium suits you. It could be a photo of your interpretation of his work with the title in French. More will be explained in the French lesson. However it would be wonderful if we could have some artwork of the same brilliant standard that we had last year when we did Robert Doisneau.

Good Luck!

Izza Binnie Head of French

THE FIRE STATION

Year 6 Arabic children recently visited the Fire Station as part of their Arabic topic Writing Stories. They interviewed the firemen asking them questions on safety and how to put out fires a perfect topic for their essays on brave people.

JPS Sports
DC ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014
On Thursday March 6th, the 2014 DC Athletics Championships were once again battled out at Dubai College. The JPS children were, as always, a credit to the school and gave their all in every event. There were a number of standout performances on the day with many of the JPS collective finishing first within their respective events. JPS matched the performance of 2013 with a 4th place finish overall, and a full list of results is displayed on the PE notice boards. A huge Well Done has to go out to all of our wonderful competitors for their hard work in the lead up to the event and in every single event that they completed on the day. Some of the key highlights from the championships: The Farrell duo of Ned Farrell and Lottie Farrell, with Ned winning the High Jump with a very mature performance, resulting in a highest jump of 1.35m, and little sister, Lottie, then going on to win the Ball Throw with an excellent throw of 22.49m. Kyle Van Der Merwe completed an impressive jumps double win with 3.46m in the Long jump and 1.15m in the high jump. Outstanding wins for Emma Thompson and Sylvie Mezu who completed a very successful day for JPS on the high jump beds with Emma leaping to 1.1m and Sylvie clearing 1.16m

Thomas Collins was the lone winner in the hurdles and came bounding in with a time of 9.78s to win the Year 5 Boys B race Aba Agbemebiese impressed the crowds with her 3.17m jump in the long jump to win that event for the Year 5 Girls Lianne Bradbury was crowned as the champion ball thrower with a wonderful throw of 34.08m The atmosphere was electric in the JPS tent during the 75m sprint for the Year 5 team as they took a clean sweep of wins. Emily Davidson set the standard for her team mates in impressive fashion when she tore clear of the pack and won convincingly in the Girls A race with a time of 11.46s. Tara Malhotra then followed suit, and, with a gritty determination, Tara was able to clock a time of 12.11s and take the win in the B race. Will Farrow kept the sweep going when he also came out of a tight A race with the win and a time of 10.78, which was the fastest time of the Year 5 Team. Thomas Collins then sealed the clean sweep with his first place in the B race, in a time of 11.52s. The year 5 girls relay team of Emily Davidson, Tara Malhotra, Sylvie Mezu, and Aba Agbemebiese ran clear of the opposition with a very professional looking performance and a final time of 33.72. The stand out track performance of the day was the domination of the Year 6 girls 600m A race. Ella Halpin took the lead right from the start of the race and destroyed the field with a pace that none of the other girls could cope with. Ella made her incredible time of 1.54.98s look effortless!
In keeping with the last few years, JPS won the Tug of War!

The JPS PE Department is extremely proud of the boys and girls who competed in the Championships, and the dedication and effort that the children put in on the day was faultless. The support from the parents throughout the athletics season has been amazing so THANK YOU! Lee Hole Head of PE

GIRLS FOOTBALL
JPS competed in the Duplays Dubai Girls' Football League Finals at Jebel Ali on Tuesday, in the plate competition. The girls all played really well and recorded a 1-0 (goal from Kate McDermott) win against JESS Ranches, and two draws against Raffles and AAM in their pool which was enough to take them through to the semifinals. In the semi-final, JPS played a very attacking game and managed to beat Wellington Silicon Oasis 1-0 (goal from Kate McDermott) to book their place in the final against DESS. The final was a very hard fought match with both teams having chances at either end, but a great corner from Lianne Bradbury was put away by Ella Fennell, giving JPS victory overall with a 1-0 win! Well done to the JPS defence and Sophie Fennell who did not concede one goal during the whole tournament - a great feat! All the girls played their hearts out and thoroughly deserved to win!

Well done JPS!

The Team: Lianne Bradbury, Sophie Fennell, Ella Fennell, Jennifer Buchanan, Kate McDermott, Alina Shaikh, Katerina Karlova, Leyli Sabbagh, Caitlin Van Loggerenberg, and Ananya Krishna
