Some Useful Thermodynamics Expressions System Surroundings Work A part of the universe selected and isolated for study.

Everything in the universe which is not in the system.

The line integral of a force along the displacement ds F of the body onto which the force acts: Work = F. ds
The capacity to do work. A property which is not a function of the mass of the system to which it refers, e.g., temperature or density. A property which is proportional to the mass of the system to which it refers; e.g., volume. A region of the system where all the intensive properties are everywhere the same. A system having only one phase. A system having more than one phase. A system which does not permit mass to enter or leave the system. Energy which is in transition due to a difference in temperature. A change in the thermodynamic properties of a system. A process in which there is no exchange of heat between system and surroundings. A process in which the temperature of the system remains constant. A process in which the pressure of the system remains constant. A process in which the volume of the system remains constant. A process in which the entropy of the system remains constant. A process in which the enthalpy of the system remains constant. A process which proceeds so slowly that system and surroundings are always in equilibrium. Absence of change or any tendency toward change on a macroscopic scale.
