Lord of the Flies Survival of the Fittest Lesson Plan Objectives: SWBAT create a survival plan by working together

in small groups and recreating conversations they would need to have if they were really stranded on an island. SWBAT understand and analyze the perspectives of the boys in Lord of the Flies by participating in the Survival of the Fittest activity with group members. Common Core Standards (11-12): RL 2, W 2-4, SL 1 and 4, L 1 and 2 Materials: Packet that I will provide them with their group activity questions and packet that explains the materials they are provided with on the island. Procedures: 1. Introduce that we will be reading Lord of the Flies. 2. Introduce the activity by telling students that we will be starting an activity where they are stranded on a deserted island and must devise a survival plan with their group. Show the PowerPoint to introduce the activity. 3. I walk them through the packet questions and explain what I want students to complete and discuss. 4. I will explain that I will assess the survival plans and the group that I deem have the best survival plan will receive a free homework pass for second marking period. 5. I will then divide them into four groups and then pass out materials. 6. Monitor each groups progress and questions as I walk among the groups. 7. They will have two days to complete the activity. Assessment: I will grade their assessments based on completion of the packet and their explanation of their survival plan and how they will build their communities. I will also check for grammar and complete sentences in their writing.
