RUNNING HEAD: DISNEY MOVIE ASSIGNMENT Cynthia Gomez Sociology Block B Ms.

. Arguedas March 3, 2014 In most Disney movies, the protagonist and antagonist of the movie try to change their social status to become someone or something that they hope to achieve. Whether it be a person with a large amount of power or someone who just wants to be happy, they try to become someone else. In Disney movies, the protagonists and antagonists are seeking a change in status throughout the storyline. In the film, The Little Mermaid, the protagonist, Ariel, is a 16 year-old mermaid who is the daughter of King Triton. Ariels roles are to obey her father, attend vocal lessons, and behave herself because she is part of the royal family. Throughout the movie, she disobeys her fathers rules, one of them being to go to the surface and make contact with humans. Ariel defies her father and makes contact with a human, Prince Eric, and wants to become human so she can be with him. She then goes to Ursula, the witch of the sea, and also the antagonist. She makes Ariel human but makes a deal with her. If Ariel cant make Prince Eric fall in love with her in three days, Ursula has permission to keep her in her garden and belongs to the witch of the sea. Ursula tricks Ariel because she wants to change her social

status from witch of the sea to ruler of sea. Ariel fails to make the deal and King Triton gives up his power to save Ariel. Ursulas status then changes to ruler of all the seas but Ariel still remains a mermaid. Then, Prince Eric gets rid of Ursula, King Triton gets his title back and grants permission for Ariel to become a human.

DISNEY MOVIE PROJECT

In the movie, Lilo and Stitch, the protagonist, Lilo, is a young girl who doesnt seem to fit in and is just looking for friend. Lilo wants to fit in with her friends at school and then escapes from a different galaxy to earth and befriends Lilo. Captain Gantu is the antagonist in this film, and he is trying to catch stitch and the mad scientist that created him, Dr. Jumba. Lilo tries to change her status by wanting to find a friend that will stand by her rather than having no friends at all. Captain Gantu is one of the head workers from the galaxy and wants to keep his title of head master. But once Stitch escapes, he wants to make sure he keeps his title and job. Once Captain Gantu finds out that Dr. Jumba and his assistant Pleakly are no where near bringing Stitch back, he goes comes to earth himself to retrieve Stitch. But Stitch is given permission to stay on earth with Lilo. Both Lilo and Captain Gantu dont have as much of a change of status as much as Ursula and Ariel in The Little Mermaid. But all four characters are searching for something to change or improve about themselves. Throughout the storyline, the protagonists and antagonists make sacrifices to achieve the status they wish to attain. In the end, the protagonists are the characters that seem to hold their change in status longer than the antagonists.
