Lesson Agenda Parts of an Atom Lesson: Understanding the different parts of an atom Objective: After a PowerPoint presentation about

how to identify the amount of protons, neutrons, and electrons from an element on the periodic table, the students will then engage in an activity demonstrating their ability to identify the subatomic particles for a given element. Essential Questions: What are the parts of an atom? How can we use these subatomic particles to identify elements? Content Standards: CA. 8. 3. Each of the more than 100 elements of matter has distinct properties and a distinct atomic structure. All forms of matter are composed of one or more of the elements. As a basis for understanding this concept: a Students know the structure of the atom and know it is composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. f. Students know how to use the periodic table to identify elements in simple compounds. Vocabulary: proton, neutron, electron, nucleus, atomic number, atomic mass, and subatomic particles Materials: Projector, Computer, Prepared Handouts, Whiteboard, Markers, fuzzy balls, felt, poster paper, and a PowerPoint presentation on the Parts of an Atom Into: The teacher will introduce the lesson by having the students recall their knowledge about the four basic parts to the atom. Students will get in groups to create their own model of an atom based upon prior knowledge, using the felt and fuzzy balls. Through: The teacher will then give a PowerPoint presentation about the specific numbers that classify particular elements on the periodic table. The students will take notes about how to identify the subatomic particles based upon the element chart. Beyond: The students will be distributed into groups and given a specific element to breakdown into subatomic particles. They will then draw this element on a poster labeling the subatomic particles and present their findings to the class. Assessment: The teacher will assess student learning informally by observing the groups throughout the class period. Two methods of formal assessment will be collected and examined for proficiency, the group work poster and a worksheet for homework with the various elements.
