Spelling I do not send home words on a sheet in an effort to save paper. Your child will be writing them in his or her agenda every Monday. I will also include those in my newsletters. Argumentative Writing We have started a new writing project argumentative writing. Did I just hear some of you saying that your child is a pro with arguments so they shouldnt have any problems coming up with arguments to support their stand? Yes, some have that talent to come up with arguments with ease. My daughter was one who I always said would have made a good lawyer. Dont tell her that I shared this about her. Seriously, we started our unit with reading an argumentative essay about hand dryers for a schools bathrooms. We highlighted the arguments one color, the counterarguments another color, and reasons that supported each argument a third color. Your child has the anchor chart in his or her writing binder. Here is the gyst of what is expected from your child for this assignment: Introduction: state both sides of the issue (first sentence), state 3 reasons to support your side of the issue; and a powerful sentence that states your point of view. Body: Paragraph 2 state your first reason and give specific examples; Paragraph 3 state your second reason and give specific details; Paragraph 4 state your third reason and specific details; Paragraph 5 state the counterarguments for the issue. Conclusion: Restate your 3 reasons that support your point of view; Tell the reader what you want them to do.
