REPORT ON PROSECUTION OF FGM CASES IN KENYA 1.

According to Report submitted today by the Inspector-General of Police (IG) to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) a total of 71 FGM cases have been taken to Court from 2011 todate. 2. Of those cases, 33 are pending before Court; 16 convictions; 18 acquittals; and 4 withdrawals. 3. The reported cases arise from the following Counties: Narok; Kitui; West-pokot; Meru; Tharaka-Nithi; Embu; Elgeyo Marakwet; Kisii; Migori; Marsabit and Kiambu. 4. Some of the challenges identified by the IG in investigating and prosecuting fgm cases include: Non-reporting of the crime; Cultural beliefs and attitudes; Non-cooperation with Law Enforcement Agencies; Fear and intimidation of complainants, witnesses and victims; Lack of information on the dangers of fgm.

Last month, the DPP established a specialized anti-fgm Prosecution

Unit to sensitize communities on the Anti-fgm legislation and prosecute fgm cases. The team is scheduled to roll-out to fgm prone areas this week. Dated: 1st April, 2014.
