(a) Energy Saving technologies

In this science and technology podcast from the museum of science in Boston, two people are interviewed regarding their studies related to energy saving technologies. The rst person to be interviewed is Dr. Angela Belcher, who is a materials chemist from MIT. Dr. Belcher was surprised by how organisms use proteins and materials spread on their environment to build exquisite and beauty structures such as abalone shells. She was fascinated and decided to manipulated simple organisms DNA in order to make them build different structures that can be used by human beings. She and her team have been able to make organisms build batteries, fuel cells, materials for catalysts among others, and now expect to make more efcient solar cells by using biological material on them. Next, Shakeel Avadhany, CEO and co-founder of Levant Power, is interviewed. Levant Power is a company he created with two colleagues when he was a student at MIT with the aim of developing and bringing Genshock to market, a shock absorber that generates electricity from bumps on the road. This technology consists on a regular hydraulic shock absorber where the uid passes through an hydraulic motor coupled to a generator. Their invention can be used in trucks, buses and even military vehicles to provide electrical power in order to save fuel from the alternator. The company is now working hard to make the product more efcient and reliable and hope to be able to work with motor companies as an original equipment manufacturer.
