2.7
COORDINATION BETWEEN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Learning Outcomes:
Compare and contrast nervous coordination with hormonal coordination. The examples of the coordination between the nervous system and endocrine system. Importance of coordination between the nervous system and the endocrine system.
Similarities
Both can senses changes in the environment (stimuli). Both system function in controlling and regulating activities in the human body.
Nervous Coordination
Hormonal Coordination
Differences
Nerves, brain and the spinal cord Nerve impulse Component Agent involved Transport Nature of message Destination of message Endocrine glands Hormones
Nerve fibres
Electrical and chemical
Bloodstream
Chemicals Target organs Relatively slower
Effectors
Rapid Localised
Speed of transmission
Area affected
Widespread
2. Coordination between nervous system and endocrine system in fright and flight situations
Fright and flight situation = Frightening situation
Examples : Landslide, tsunami and fire
Stimulus
Brain interprets and associates. Brain decides on responses. It send impulses to adrenal glands.
Effects: 1. Dilation of pupils 2. Increase in breathing rate 3. Increase in heartbeat 4. Increase in blood pressure 5. Increase in blood glucose level 6. Increase in energy production Response
3. Importance of coordination between nervous system and endocrine system in response to stimulus.
Regulation of body activities. Ensure a smooth and appropriate response to a specific stimulus. All these important for good physical and mental in human beings.
ACTIVITY: Solving problem 8 members each group. Discuss with your group members and solve the problems given
