KESSLER PLEASED WITH SIGNING OF SB373

CHARLESTON, W.V. Senate President Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) applauds Governor Tomblin for signing Senate Bill 373, introduced to protect the states waterways, into law. Senate Bill 373, the Above Ground Storage Tank Act, will help guarantee that every West Virginia resident has access to clean drinking water, says Kessler. I am pleased that Governor Tomblin has signed into law this important piece of legislation to ensure that the proper regulations are in place to protect our water resources and the citizens of this great state. SB 373 is the result of a chemical spill in January in Kanawha County that left 300,000 West Virginians without clean drinking water. The Above Ground Storage Tank Act includes new requirements for above ground storage tank inspections, medical monitoring and early detection technology at water plants and plans to protect against pollutants in drinking water supplies. The chemical spill, originating from the property of Freedom Industries along the Elk River, caused a nine county State of Emergency and a Do Not Use water order. Senate President Kessler says this legislation is the direct result of leadership in both the Senate and House working toward a common goal protecting West Virginians.
