Steps:
Substitution
1. Take one equation and isolate one of the variables. Hint: If possible, isolate variable with coefficient of 1 or -1. 2. Plug this new equation in for the variable in the other equation (SUBSTITUTION!) 3. Solve for the only remaining variable 4. Once you have solved for this variable, solve for the other variable. 5. Check your answers by plugging them into the t wo equations.

Examples
How do we solve for x and y using substitution? 1. 2x+y=6 3x-2y=16 2. 4x-2y=12 2x-3y=2
Tuesday, April 1, 14
Answer to #1
1. 2x+y=6 3x-2y=16 Step 1: y=6-2x Step 2: 3x-2(6-2x)=16 Step 3: 3x-12+4x=16 7x-12=26 7x=28 --> x=4

Answer to #1 (continued)
x=4 Step 4: y=6-2x y=6-2(4) y=6-8 --> y=-2 Step 5: 2(4)+(-2)=8-2=6 CHECK! 3(4)-2(-2)=12+4=16 CHECK!
