    ARTIFICIAL IMMUNE SYSTEM APPROACH TO FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM

    ABSTRACT:

    Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) in a distributed fa ct or y environment has attracted researchers attention in these recent years. Various introductory approaches were proposed to address the distributed production scheduling dilemma of FMS, where a significant part of the problem lies with preventive maintenance machine down- time. This affects overall production schedules, rendering previously proposed approaches ineffective. This paper introduces the Artificial Immune System (AIS) approach to tackle this underlying problem. Using the antigenic clustering features inherent in AIS, the problem will be replicated and tested with several parameter tweaks to demonstrate its effectiveness in mitigating the issue.
