LATENESS AND ABSENCES We have noticed an increase in the number of students who are late for school on a daily basis. SCHOOL STARTS AT 8.55AM every morning and students are expected to be ready to start the day at that time. Ideally students should be at school by 8.45am giving them time to organise their bags and be ready to start when the bell rings at 8.55am. Continuous lateness will be monitored over the next two weeks and truancy will be advised of these students. It is parents responsibility to have their children at school before the start of the school day. If your child is absent due to illness, or for other reasons, it is parents responsibility to notify school before 8.55am each day giving the reason for the absence. You can either phone school on 3889 476 or text 027 630 6897. Continued unexplained absences will also be referred to truancy.

DUFFY ASSEMBLY Monday 11th April 9.30am Will Hall, of Shortland Street fame, is coming to talk to our students at the Duffy Role Model Assembly to be held at the Scout Den on Monday 11th April at 9.30am. Parents are welcome to join us. A schoolboy flair for drama was Christchurch actor Will Hall's first step on the road to Shortland Street - the turning point in Will Hall's life came at St Andrew's College when he was bitten by the acting bug. "It was only at St Andrew's that I realised I was any good at acting." Hall, a self-confessed member of the "cool rugby crowd", was faced with the option of accountancy classes taught by his own father or drama classes taught by the charismatic drama teacher, Rozena Hallum. Hall chose the stage. "Drama was a way of avoiding accounting." It was a decision that settled his career. "Initially Rozena had her reservations about me and some of my mates -- the lads from the rugby team -- who took drama in the sixth form," recalls Hall. "We started the year doing Shakespeare for our assessment. I did Shylock from The Merchant of Venice. An outside adjudicator came in and -- a surprise to everyone -- liked what I had done and gave me the top mark in the class." Now retired, Rozena recalls the occasion well: "Will did one of Shylock's speeches in a way that was all his own. It was absolutely riveting. His father was very impressed. " Because the family were keen that Hall had a meal-ticket, he did a commerce degree in property evaluation and management at Lincoln University but the urge to act remained strong. Wills credits include the NZ Screen Directors Guild Awards for Best Actor in a TV Series Insiders Guide to Happiness in 2005 & the NZ Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Netherwood 2012. He has also starred in many more films and TV series including Eagle vs Shark, Mt Zion, Nothing Trivial, Auckland Daze & Power Rangers Mystic Force.

WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORT FOR YEARS 5 - 8 What is it? Each year we enter teams in the Hagley Park Winter Sports Competition, playing schools from all around Christchurch. The sports we will be playing this year are netball, soccer and rugby. The competition runs over 10 weeks starting on 23rd May. All games are at Hagley Park on Friday afternoons. (The bus leaves at 12.15pm and we get back to school at 3:10). Whats the aim? Our aim is for children to have a go at an organised sport in a low pressure environment, where the emphasis is on enjoyment, setting small goals and improving a bit each week during practices and the games. Sportsmanship is a very big part of these games. What do you need? The cost for the buses is $45 for the season. This needs to be paid in full by Friday 16th May to allow your child to play Winter Sport. School provides the shorts and tops. Children need to bring their own boots and shin guards. Mouth guards are compulsory for rugby. Parent help We have already had several very kind offers to manage teams. The amount of teams we can enter depends on how many coaches we have. At the moment we need coaches/managers for netball, soccer and rugby. Managing a team involves accompanying the team on the bus, locating the right court/field, organising subs, a bit of first aid, refereeing (rarely) and lots of encouragement. Its full on, but very interesting and enjoyable! If you are available on Friday afternoons and youd like to help please let us know. Please complete the form below and return to the school office by Wednesday 16th April to allow for team registration. Payment must be received in full by Friday 16th May to allow your child to participate in winter sport. WINTER SPORT REGISTRATION FORM

PARKING AT THE SCHOOL GATE We have noticed over the past few weeks cars are double parking, parking over driveways and parking illegally. Whilst it is very tempting to do this, especially when the weather is cold and wet, it puts all our students at risk from being hit by cars. Please respect all people around the school and park legally and considerately. The Police have indicated they intend to enforce road rules and we expect they will be monitoring this over the following weeks. TECHNICRAFT FEES REMINDER A letter has been sent home as a reminder that Technicraft fees, for all Year 7 & 8 students, are due by Thursday 17th April. Technicraft is compulsory for all our Year 7 & 8 students and is part of the school curriculum. The cost is $45.00 per student. You may wish to pay by internet banking or pay regular weekly payments. SCHOOL DONATIONS School donations are set at $35.00 for one child and $45.00 for two or more children if paid before the end of Term 1. They will increase to $40.00 for one child and $50.00 for two or more children, after this. School donations help pay for extra things for your children that the Ministry of Education funding does not cover, like extra reading and maths equipment, sports equipment and library books. Your donation is very gratefully received. THE LAST WORD NO MATTER WHAT ELSE HAPPENS IT STARTS AND ENDS WITH FAMILY Regards Brian Walkinshaw, Principal
