LO1 Single Camera Techniques

Hannah OConnor

This is a TV Live Comedy based around an Irish loud mouthed Irish Matriach whose favourite past time is meddling with the lives of her six children this narrative is a linear because it has a beginning middle and an end. This is a realist comedy because it is something that might happen in Ireland, although it is slightly exaggerated. Each episode is a closed ending because it does not have any cliff hangers or nail biting endings and also where it doesnt leave the audience wanting to ask questions because all the questions are answered. This is a sequal because it is a TV Series and would have numerous Seasons within the show. The lighting is quite bright dependent where they are, for instance they could be in their living room and the lighting would be bright but if they are in a pub the lighting would be dimmed. The camera angles are rather the same, either shot reverse shot, long shots, mid shots or close ups. Since this is a live performance, they edit using a vision mixer which is then broadcasted to the audience at home. There isnt much sound within the Series, there is them talking and then the audience laughing because it is a live performance, they might have different sound effects dependent if someone is at the door you would hear the doorbell ring. The scripting is improvised in some stages of the production, although most of it is learnt; because it is a live performance they might tend to mess up or corpse and so they may have to re-do the scene a few times until they get it right. The Director would direct the actors, what to say, how to say it, where to stand, to try to create their image and recreate what they might see in their head to camera, they also direct the camera crew if they need to change any camera angles.

Mrs Browns Boys

Miranda.
Miranda is 6 feet 1 inch tall and gets called 'Sir' once too often. She has never fit in with her old boarding school friends, Tilly and Fanny, and finds social situations awkward, especially around men. She is a constant disappointment to her mother Penny who is desperate for her to get a proper job and a husband. Although Miranda owns and lives above her own joke shop, she lacks any real capacity for business, so it is managed by her childhood friend Stevie Sutton. The restaurant next door is run by Clive, who also works as a waiter. He has employed a chef - Gary Preston, a university friend whom Miranda fancies. The various episodes revolve around this set-up. Each episode rarely has a cliff hanger, although with the recent season, it was left on a big cliff hanger when Miranda had to decide between two men who proposed to her. Miranda is a sequel, so it has numerous amounts of episodes within each season. The lighting within the show can be either dim lighting or bright lighting, dependent where they are. Usually at the beginning of the show, Miranda has bright lighting because she is in her apartment, whereas the dim lighting would be used in the pub. The camera angles are rather the same, either shot reverse shot, long shots, mid shots or close ups, since Miranda is not a live performance, the editing is done in post production, although it is filmed in front of a live audience. There isnt much sound within the Series, there is them talking and then the audience laughing because it is a live performance, they might have different sound effects dependent if someone is at the door you would hear the doorbell ring. The script is very rarely improvised, if anything were to be improvised you wouldnt know because they do not corpse or have to re-do the scenes if it goes wrong.

Atonement
Atonement is a period drama film, the film is about Fledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwan, this is based in World War 2. This is a realist drama because this is something that could have happened or have aspects of reality within the film. This is a linear narrative because the story has a beginning, middle and an end. This film is not a sequal because the film did not end with any type of cliff hanger and was not left open for any other type of film to be made. This film has a closed ending because all of the questions are answered and we find out what happens with her sister. Within different scenes the lighting changes dependent on the time, for instance in the beginning we see Cecilia and Briony in the garden the lighting in this is quite bright, but then later on in the film when Robbie Turner has to go to war, the lighting is dark and gloomy. There are different camera angles, though the main angles they have used within the film were mid shots and shot reverse shots, also a few long shots. Since this is a film, they would have edited this in post production and would have had a script to see where each clip would go and follow the storyline. The sounds within Atonement, there is nondigetic and digetic sounds, there is different music in the background to give atmosphere and as well as the speech, there is sound effects for when Robbie is at war, so for instance, they would hear explosions and gunshots.

Sweeney Todd: The demon barber of fleet street.

The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical. This is a non-realist film because it is a musical. This is a linear narrative because the story has a beginning, middle and an end. This film is not a sequal because the film did not end with any type of cliff hanger and was not left open for any other type of film to be made. hanger and was not left open for any other type of film to be made. This film has a closed ending because all of the questions are answered and we find out what happened to Sweeney Todds wife Lucy. The lighting within the film are dim and dark and they use a lot of cold and dull colours to represent the theme of the film, because Sweeney Todd is a horror film, having bright lighting and bold colours would not suit the idea of the production and would not give the same feel, as opposed to a gloomy, dim, 1800s London which is where this film is set. There are different camera angles, though the main angles they have used within the film were mid shots and shot reverse shots, also a few long shots. Since this is a film, they would have edited this in post production and would have had a script to see where each clip would go and follow the storyline, with the songs they had to either speed it up to fit the actions which is something they would have had to practise on set if it was their first day filming that particular scene/song. The sounds within Atonement, there is non-digetic and digetic sounds, there is different music in the background to give atmosphere and as well as the speech.

Sweeney Todd: The demon barber of fleet street screen shots.

Evaluation of screenshots
Above are screen shots of Sweeney Todd: The demon barber of fleet street, where Mrs Lovett finds Pirelli dead in the case. Throughout the scene, the camera does not move much, it shows close ups and a few long shots of the barber, this is so that the audiences eye line does not move so much throughout the screen, focusing on the main two characters. This is important to a production because the audience need to be able to understand the scene and if they do not understand it then they arent going to watch the movie. The characters are mainly to the centre of the screen, although they are not fully on the third, this is to allow the characters to be fully in focus and help the audience to understand that they are important in the scene. They have used dim lighting, they have used the three point lighting rule to help the characters stand out from the background since their clothing is dark, they would be camouflaged into the background. Throughout the scene we see a lot of quick close ups when used with dialogue, this is to help the audience understand the conversation and also be able to see the characters response and emotions toward what the other is saying and how they feel in that particular situation, this is allowing us as an audience to connect and get involved with the film more.

Key Light

Fill light

In the above shot we see Helena Bonham Carters face being highlighted by the 3 point light rule. This is to allow the audience to see her facial expression, this is no backlight in this because the background has no light and is not relevant in the scene.

Wallace and Gromit

Wallace and Gromit is a clay mation animation short film. It is directed by Nick Park, their production company is Aardman Animations. This is not realistic short film because it is based on fantasy and also a clay Animation. This short film is not based off any kind of original film like a spin off although the films do have sequals. They tend to have closed endings and the films have a linear narrative, so they would have a beginning, middle and an end. The lighting within Wallace and Gromit, depends on where the characters are set and what time of the day it might be. For example, in a trip to the moon if they were in space, then the lighting wouldnt be too bright, but they would have a main light placed upon the characters to help give the animation a more realistic feel. The camera angles used mainly have long shots, close ups and mid shots. The sound within the short film, they have non-diegetic and diegetic, for example the wrong trousers they use various sound effects like the train, gunshots, although they do have dramatic music in the background to help give that particular scene have a better effect. They would have done the script before making the film because it is an animation the makers need to know what each character is going to say and so therefore they cannot improvise any scenes if they have already recorded the voices.

The Snowman and the snow dog

The Snowman and the snow dog is a short animated film. The writers have used a linear narrative, so there is a beginning, middle and an end in chronological order. This short film is not realistic because they have a dog made out of snow and snow does not come to life, the animation is also computer generated. Although there is no cliff hanger, sequels have been made, this film is the second sequel. The lighting and the colours are bright throughout and there is a variety of camera shots being used, this is to keep the viewers visually interested. To film this they would have had to record the voices first and then add them into the film in post production where they would edit and lip sync. During recording they may have changed and also develop the script further. The music in this film is used to make the film more interesting, although it has different camera angles to make it visually interesting, the music would help it to become musically interesting and bring atmosphere, since if the film was silent it would not be interesting.
