Compact Housing

It is a known fact that the world is getting more and more crowded .Within the next year or so the number of humans on this planet will exceed seven billion. India is the secondmost populous country with over 1.24 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world .Its urban population is expected to reach 590 million by 2030. While our numbers continue to grow exponentially, the planet we live on, the very land that supports all life, human and otherwise, remains a closed, finite and irreplaceable resource.

Housing today has become a static fixture in society which does not take into account the growing population worldwide and its impact on availability of land. Neglecting the issue will ultimately lead to cramped living conditions, lack of open spaces and poor life quality in growing cities. Can we project and plan beyond our own self-interest and personal, human lifespans in order to preserve for future generations adequate resources for rich and fulfilling lives?

This thesis attempts to design a housing that responds to growing needs and demands of lack of accommodation in growing and overcrowded cities without compromising the needs of occupants by creating different type of residential environment that allows the ease of alterability and portability. The thesis proposes the home as a module that is easily added and removed from a larger structure and that holds the ability to expand and multiply to meet the needs of the owners. The selected site is located in Dwarka, a sub city located in the South West district of Delhi. It aims designing housing unit by reducing a small living space to the bare necessities, whilst allowing consumers to quickly transform and personalize the function, so that it is comfortable for the user, yet include all the necessary day-to-day amenities.
