After your child reads with you, ask them about the different parts of the story: characters, setting, events, problem, and solution. This will help them build their comprehension of the story.
April:
Reading Writing
We concluded our lessons on inferring this week, and moved into summarizing. We summarized stories together by lling in a story map about the text (characters, setting, order of events, problem and solution). We will continue to practice summarizing through next week. Please feel free to practice this at home by talking about the stories you read with your child. We began our new writing unit which is on nonction writing. The kids will each be writing their own research book on a topic of their choice. We spent our writing time looking at nonction text features (glossary, index, captions, table of contents, etc.). The kids also picked the topics they are wanting to write about. Next week, we will begin researching on the topic of their choice. This is one of my favorite writing units of the year, and I look forward on seeing the wonderful books they create.
Math
Next week we delve into our 3-D shapes study. Samantha will be teaching three of these lessons, and we will continue to run our math groupings.
Science
We had fun exploring more solid materials. This week we had a chance to investigate with solid materials that were nely ground or small (cornmeal, rice, and a variety of beans). Next week, we hope to conclude our solids and liquids unit. From there, we will move to our last social studies unit on maps and globes.
