The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, in conjunction with the Baltimore City Fire
Department and the IRC Fire Sprinkler Coalition, will hold a live burn demonstration on W. Camden
Street (between Eutaw and S. Howard), located southwest of the Baltimore Convention Center.

The event is the highlight of a fire safety seminar hosted by Chief Kevin Cartwright, Public
Information Officer of the Baltimore City Fire Department. The burn is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Nationally respected home fire safety experts and burn survivors will be available for interviews to
discuss the danger of home fires and what people can do to prevent them.

This is an especially timely topic as the weather turns cooler – many fires occur in autumn and winter
as people try to keep their homes warm with alternative and sometimes unsafe, methods.

The International Code Council (ICC), the leading building code body in the United States, is
meeting this week in Baltimore for the 2009-10 Code Development Hearings and Annual
Conference. The decisions that they make will affect the safety elements in new homes.

More than 3,000 people die in fires every year. The live burn demonstration will raise awareness to
the fact that residential fire sprinklers are an answer to the nation’s fire problem.
