European Union (EU)

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 28 member states that are
located primarily in Europe. The EU operates through a system of supranational
independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by the member states.
Institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union,
the European Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central
Bank, the Court of Auditors, and the European Parliament. The European Parliament is
elected every five years by EU citizens. The EU's de facto capital is Brussels

Social programs -

1. Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Surakhsa Yojana :- MGPSY ,a pension scheme for blue-collar
Indian workers would be launched in the Gulf next month. Under the scheme, Government
contributes Rs.1,000 per annum for men and Rs. 2000 for women subscribers of MGPSY
who save between Rs.1,000 and Rs.12,000 per year in NPS-Lite.

2. Centre launches skill development and job placement scheme 'Roshini' for rural youth
and women in Maoist affected 24 districts in 9 states.

3. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana for BPL families in Assam: BPL families are availing
medical benefits under this scheme.

4. Mukhyamantri Yuva Swarozgar Yojana launched in Madhya Pradesh. For assisting youths
of Madhya Pradesh to start their own industries and businesses. Under the scheme, time-
limit of one month has been fixed for disposal of loan cases by banks.

5. Umeed a central social welfare scheme for poor rural women launched in Jammu and
Kashmir by Rahul Gandhi

6. Govt launches schemes for free generic drugs at health centres: The initiatives, called
'Free Drug Service' and 'Free Diagnostics Service' under the National Health Mission:
Gujarat Info Petro Ltd, a subsidiary of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, has signed an
agreement with Cason Engineering Plc, Hungary, in pursuant to the MOU signed during the
Vibrant Gujarat Summit-2013, for a gas monitoring system.

7. Golden Girl Scheme Launched in Andhra Pradesh to protect girl child and ensure her
education. The scheme is limited to two children of each BPL family.

8. Andhra Pradesh Launched Amma Hastham Scheme, a welfare scheme named after
Indira Gandhi Amma Hastham as a Ugadi gift to the poor. This scheme is for supplying
specified quantities of 9 essential commodities in a packet just for Rs.185 to white card
households.

9. Dhanwantari Yojana in the healthcare sector - Madhya Pradesh

10. Priyadarshni Awaas Yojna in Haryana state at Karnal to provide affordable housing
facility to the people living in rural areas.

11. Nitaqat scheme: India and Saudi Arabia for migrant labourers

12. National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), aiming to eradicate poverty in villages by
empowering women in the country.

13. National Cyber Security Policy that aims to create a secure computing environment in
the country.

14. Government has revised wages under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment
Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) from April 1 to factor in inflation. The maximum wage of Rs.
214 has been fixed for Haryana, and a minimum of Rs. 135 for the northeastern States.

15. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme for the LPG consumers, putting subsidy cash
directly into the account of beneficiaries, launched in 20 districts with high Aadhaar card The
scheme is likely to be extended to the entire country.

16. Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), which provides financial assistance to mothers for
institutional deliveries.
