PROCEDURES PERFORMED AND COMMENTS

During my sleep study rotation I was able to apply sensors on patients head, face, legs and elastic belts around chest or abdomen, which are all used to record patients brain waves, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rhythm and rate, leg/body movement, and carbon dioxide levels. Patients breathing was also examined by measuring airflow, breathing effort, snoring and oxygen saturation.

PROCEDURES OBSERVED AND COMMENT

I observed a patient who was in the process of sleep apnea diagnosis. Patient was recommended by a doctor to a sleep study in order to diagnose whether or not the patient has sleep disorders. Patient was obese and regularly stops breathing during sleep for 10 seconds or longer, which might have been caused by blocked airflow during sleep, such as from narrowed airways. Patient also sits up throughout the night, but does not know it.

The sleep study technician clarified to me that complications associated with sleep apnea might cause lots of cardiovascular issues and even death. Also during sleep apnea, oxygen level flows up and down throughout the night causing blood cloating, which might result strokes. In addition, the technician stated that hormones and glucose levels are also influenced by the depth of a persons sleep, therefore, diabetics and obese individuals could be more affected.

The most significant learning experience occurred during this week is learning how to apply sensory wired on the patients body in order to determine if the patient has asleep apnea (a chronic condition dirupting sleep). Also learning that a person does not necessarily have to be obese to acquire sleep apnea was an important aspect I learned this week.
