Mathematical Reflections 536: Reflection 5

Introduction
This document is a tool designed to help give teachers a clear description of what should be
covered in Reflection 5 of the Reflections 536 textbook. The textbook offers more material
than can be covered in most regular classes. However, this summary should be seen as a
guide only; the amount of time available as well as the students' interests and capabilities
will determine the material which is covered. Further information about the material is
found in the Teacher's Guide.

Objectives Covered in Reflection 5

This reflection covers General Objective 3: To help students develop their ability to analyze
statistical data and Terminal Objective 3.1: To solve problems related to situations involving a
one- or two-variable statistical distribution. Students will complete their study at the
secondary level of analyzing data in order to make intelligent decisions. They will study one-
and two-variable distributions. The emphasis is on the interpretation of the different
measurements they calculate.
It is important to refer to the MEQ Curriculum document for more details on the
objectives of the program (pp. 29 - 31).
Time 10% of the year.

Comments
1. Prior Knowledge:
Math 116: Students learned to interpret and present data in tables and graphs.
Math 314: They learned to use certain descriptive measures: mean, median, mode and
range.
Math 436: They learned about measures of position (eg. quartiles (box-and-whisker
plot), quintiles, percentiles) and began to study the concept of dispersion.
They also explored the notion of bias in gathering data.
2. The emphasis should be on the students’ understanding of concepts rather than the
application of formulas. Hence, it is recommended that calculations and computers be
used in the development of conceptual understanding.
3. This reflection has two goals:
1. to complete the analysis and interpretation of a distribution begun in Secondary 1,
by examining certain measures of dispersion.
2. to study the correlation between two variables.

4. Note:
As the students taking Math 536 generally constitute the top 35 - 40% of the
school’s population, they should be expected to work more autonomously on
assignments in order to cover the course content. Optional topics could be assigned
for independent study.
