Intro > The Atterberg limits are the basic measurement of the nature of a fine-grained soil.

It is depending on the water content of the soil, which is it may appear in four states such as solid, semi-solid, plastic and liquid. In each state of a soil, the consistency and behavior is different and consequently so are its engineering properties. In addition, the boundary between each state can be determined based on a change in the soil's behavior.

Obj : to determine The consistency of a soil is based upon these two limits which are the plastic limit and liquid limit.

to determine the Plasticity Index (PI) of a soil sample

to determine type of soil between silt and clay and determine different types of silts and clays

Theoretical background The Atterberg limits are based on the moisture content of the soil. The plastic limit is the moisture content that defines where the soil changes from a semi-solid to a plastic (flexible) state. Mean while the liquid limit is the moisture content that defines where the soil

changes from a plastic to a viscous fluid state.
