Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) Supports Reasonable Minimum Wage Increase to Match Federal Standard
(St. Paul, Minn) Senator Carla Nelson supported a plan to raise Minnesotas minimum wage to match the federal minimum wage and putting the state in line with neighboring states. The proposal was rejected by the majority who insisted on a much higher rate that will jeopardize future job growth and put Minnesota at a competitive disadvantage with other states in the Midwest. Minnesota is not an island, said Senator Carla Nelson. Commerce does not know state boundaries. We must not put our state, especially our border communities, at a competitive disadvantage. Adding an excessive minimum wage increase to the legislation that passed last year increased energy costs, increased taxes both at the federal and state level, burdensome mandates, additional regulations and healthcare costs, creates an environment in which it will be nearly impossible for businesses to succeed in our state. Real solutions to poverty include having a job climate that encourages the retention and growth of higher paying jobs, and making sure that we have the educated skilled workforce to fill those jobs, added Senator Nelson. ###
