A Beard for my Pirate

Gauge: 17 stitches = 4 inches


(I used 7US with chunky wool)

CO = Cast On
BO = Bind Off
WiPatt = Work in Pattern *K1, P1* or *P1, K1*
**The beard is all done in ribbed stitch. (K1, P1)**
CO 46 sts
(K1, P1) for three rows
(K1, P1) 16 BO14 (K1.P1) 16 to end
(K1, P1) 16 CO14 (K1.P1) 16 to end
(K1, P1) until 2 inches from the cast on edge
BO 5 stitches at beginning, (WiPatt) until end
BO5 stitches (WiPatt) until end
(WiPatt) for 1/2 inch
BO 5 stitches and (WiPatt) until end
BO5 (WiPatt) until end
(WiPatt) another 1/2 inch or until desired length covering chin
BO all stitches

Sew each step edge to the one before it


- Goal: To make the bottom edge turn inward

Mustache

Cut 9- (or more for a thicker mustache) stands of yarn (I made mine 20 in.
long) and braid. Whip stitch on to upper lip portion of beard.

Whip stitch the beard to the hat at fold on brim in the desired location
OR
Make the ear holders
CO 10sts, leaving a long tail (17-18 inches)
Knit 3 rows

K2 and place those on a stitch holder
BO 6sts, K1
K2 for 7 rows
Place those to stitched on the holder and place others on needle

Take the long tail left at the beginning and K2 for 6 rows, place those stitches on the other needle

K2, CO 6sts, K2, make a knot with both strands of yarn


Knit 1 row
BO all stitches

Whip stitch the ear pieces to beard; the wider side to the side of the beard
