UNIT: We Built a Zoo Lesson Plan Week 3 Wednesday Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Learning Target: To find the

he volume of prisms and cylinders and apply this to the construction of enclosures at a zoo. (7.G.B.6) Warm up Using the nets from the day before, have students calculate the surface area of each of their nets and turn this in (Formative Assessment). Activity have students work in groups of 3-4 and give them unit blocks - have them see how many blocks it takes to fill the entire prism (dont give them enough blocks to actually do this make them come up with the formula on their own!) Once they have come up with the formula for a rectangular prism, have them move on to a triangular prism, and then a cylinder Once the majority of the class is finished, have a whole class discussion about their findings. Once we come up with the exact formulas, have students get out their notebooks and use Split-Page Notetaking to write Volume of a Rectangular Prism on one side, and then the formula and a picture on the other side. Do the same for a triangular prism and cylinder. Go over a few examples as a class of how to use these formulas given pictures of threedimensional solids. Then give students a few examples to work on independently or in pairs. Once they have completed the examples, have a few students share their work on the board with the class. Have students get into their zoo groups to start finding the volume of all of their enclosures. Have them neatly transfer this data to their Measurement Data Sheet.
